Mini-Biography

An austere man in tone and appearance, Abbot Cellach "runs" Kells. He is Brendan's uncle and guardian who he is training to eventually take the place of Abbot at Kells. Abbot Cellach is the antagonist in the story. However, he is not evil, rather he is conflicted. As an insecure, tyrannical and disillusioned man, he struggles to keep Kells from coming apart at the seams and resents criticism, especially from Aidan or Brendan. He is disillusioned by the destruction of Iona and attempts to create something completely different. Knowing that an invasion by the Northmen could happen any time soon, he is focused only on fortifying the village walls in preparation for attack.
