Mini-Biography

An older white haired monk who, with his cat Pangur bn, arrive at Kells after the Viking invasion of his abbey and island home, Iona. Aidan was the master illuminator of Iona. Aidan is easy-going, confident and funny; a mystical eccentric who takes life from a different perspective. Aidan is a birdlike character, with snappy, quick movements. His quirky, eccentric personality adds elements of humour and lightness to the film. He has a northern Irish accent and a quick wit. Aidan is wise, very gentle, calm and a wonderful teacher and friend to Brendan. He follows the legacy of generations of masters since the time of Colm Cille. He can be utterly calm and composed even in the midst of the chaos of Kells. Aidan has a unique perspective on things, operating from a more zen-like emotional space than the Abbot. He knows how futile the Abbot's ambitions are, but realizes the need to create the book in the refuge of Kells. Aidan is a reluctant leader, who leads the other illuminators naturally and in an unassuming way, by example. His natural spiritual leadership is in direct contrast to the stressed and stubborn Abbot. Where the Abbot shouts and bosses people around, Aidan will laugh and guide them gently.
