The Singing Princess
La Rosa di Bagdad, or rather, The Singing Princess, is nothing less than a spectacular animation from the first half of the last century. It's Italy's very first full-length animated feature and in many ways it laid the foundation for the Italian animation industry.
Set in an exotic and dreamy fantasy version of Bagdad, it tells the story of how the beautiful princess Zeila has to pick a suitor among the princes in the neighboring countries. However, the evil Sheikh Jafar and his perfid warlock friend Burk have other plans for the royal heir, and are plotting against the throne. It will be up to the sweet and gentle royal musicist Amin, along with his mysterious friends, to foil Jafar's evil plans and save the princess from her cruel fate.
Despite harvesting limited interest in the U.S., the Singing Princess was a big hit in post-war Europe. The English dub features the voice of Julie Andrews, who would later become Disney's iconic Mary Poppins, marking her debut of her acting career.
