Opening of the Anime: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGr74BEY ... 8&index=31

Scene from Episode One: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPQhmErU ... re=related

(Manga Ent legally allows that scene to be up on youtube. And that's such a sweet scene. I love the way the sunset looks there. It's very beautiful. )

Now I know what your thinking, an anime from the writer of Excel Saga, and Director of Fruits Basket, Animation Runner Kuromi, and Kodocha, it's ganna be a comedy/drama(that is of course unless you read the plot and genres I wrote hehe). Wrong! Actually this is some serious stuff here. This is a deep, disturbing, interesting, and odd show. This is not a show for kids, very mature.

Anyway I heard the title mentioned once or twice over the years, but I knew nothing of it, until I heard it was going to be playing on Sc-Fi channel with Gurren Lagann. Now I knew I'd like Gurren Lagann ( I love all Gainax shows, anything they make I eat up), but never knew I'd love" Now and Then, Here and There" so much!! Man this show is really good. Of course I've only seen the first two episodes, but so far, so good. I'm going to buy this show on DVD for sure!

If you watch this show, the first episode is a little more "happy" , different, and postive then the others I hear, so keep that in mind. It gets pretty dark. I want to see where this show is going. So even if you hate the first episode, give the series a chance. So many people hate the first episode, then love the show. So watch at least the first two episodes, I beg you.

As for the dub, it's above average (in my tastes of course). I always love hearing Dan Green (voice of Yugi Mutou in Yu-Gi-Oh). This is a dub from one of the New York Studios, and I think they did a great job (so far). But remember I'm biased :P . I like all dubs, so if your subber remember that. However I still suggest checking out the dub at least.

Spoiler Warning (first two episodes)
Spoiler: show
And woah!! The part with the cat is very sickening and disturbing. As much as I love crazy, rulers, this insane king guy is a little too much for me. I mean i think I'm acually rooting for the hero for once. I useally don't do that. AND I LOVE Lala-Ru!! She's so cute and emotionless

As usual I went overboard with all the info and pictures ^^; , but whatever ;) .

Edit:

After watching this anime 3 times I am convinced this is a masterpeice. It's my second favorite anime of all time, and I'v considered moving it to my first multiple times. It's an amazing peice of art that is way more of an emotional and intellectual journey then just another anime. This is something that reaches out and grabs you, and slowly tears your heart out. I'm pretty sure that if this anime did not make you sad, you are a cold blooded monster.

You can watch Naruto and Inyuyasha untill your eyes bleed, but those are merly some popcorn entertainment, that's disposable at best, and repulsive at most. They will never impact you like this will. This is something that becomes a part of you after you watch it.

You don't watch this because you like anime with good looking guys/girls (Lala-Ru is cute, and many people like Sara, but that's not a reason to watch this) . You don't watch this because you want great action (this isn't an action series), or sexy fanservice (no fanservice in this). You don't watch this for some good laughs (no real comedy throughout this). You watch this to become a better person ;) . I am very glad I got to watch this, and wouldn't give up the experience for anything in the world.

I want to thank Central Park Media for licensing this masterpeice. Geneon had a chance to license it, but they chose not to because of the content. I'm so glad CPM decided to go for it. I am also very thankful to Manga Ent for getting this on the Sci-Fi channel and making a deal with CPM. If they had not done that, I may never have seen this, and that would be terrible.

Ah no problem. I love posting pics and info up for anime! Glad you are intigued. This anime cought my eye and now I love it. I saw the first four episodes now, can't wait to see 2 more on Monday night!!

Edit:

Well awhile ago I bought the Box Set for this show, and I completed it the week I got it. I must say, this is one amazing story. It's not entirely deep, but there are some underlying messages, and themes that are very interesting. However the story is the best part of the anime! It has an amazingly underrated plot! And for being almost 10 years old, it stands to the test of time. It's very disturbing, and very dark and twisted, but great from start to finish. Don't judge it by the first episode, because the show changes drastically after that. This anime is now my 6th favorite anime of all time. That's a real honor seeing how hard it is to get into my top ten list! :P

What a shame that the anime DVD's are Out of Print (OOP). I got the last cheap copy on Amazon.com (got the box set for $30.00 USD) . The box set is mostly sold out on online retailers, minus the now overpriced sellers on amazon . However I would bet on some stores (B&M stores, comic shops, anime stores, FYI and possibly Best Buy) still having the singles. Some stores tend to have OOP disk from years back, just sitting on their shelves collecting dust. If anyone enjoys this show, I highly sugest finding the Box Set, because the work Central Park Media put into it is amazing, the dub is high quailty, the extras are great, and you will be holding on to a peice of anime history. With Central Park Media still in hibernation, I don't see a re-release of this show for at least a year or two, and more likely never.

Ooooh, I heard of this before but it never caught my attention. After reading the plot, seeing the pictures and reading the part of your post where you mention disturbing, and very dark and twisted, I want to see this. I must see this. Maybe I will find it in 1 of the 2 Anime comic stores by me? I hope so because I want to see it subbed(no offense to the dubbers). :P

^ Yeah I wish you good luck with that. Some anime stores and comic shops, really have some gems on their shelves, and they don't even realize it. The cheapest Box Set I could find was for $60.00 on Amazon, (and that's a bit for 12 episode box set that's used, but I guess it's ok for it being OOP). But if you can find it somewhere for less then that, brand new, I'd buy it. Hell you could sell it on Amazon for $100.00 (brand new) and it would sell. That's a hell of a profit. But watching it is more enjoyable and useful.

It sucks that this is out of print. If it wasn't it be so easy to get. It's a sin. I blame (partly) fansubs on Central Park Media's problems. Topple that onto their anime is less popular/lower selling anime, high quality work(means it cost them a lot of money for each anime), the bankruptcy of the Musicland, DVD sales (in general) dropping, being independently owned, and less TV deals(due to anime's poor raitings, possibly due to fansubs again). That would hurt any company...

I think you would like this anime too Monster. The sub is fine I hear, but many people (who are "sub only") seem to enjoy the dub to. One of the best dubs out of a NYC studio for sure. King Hamdo (played by Jack Taylor ) gives the best performance by far, as the insane, leader of Hellywood. He even outshines Kouji Ishii (The Japanese voice actor). But sense you like subs, then it's worth it to get the box set. I hear the subs are good as well. I only checked it out though(for a small amount of time), didn't watch an episode subbed or anything. It didn't bother me or anything so.

If you do ever get this Monster, the first episode is almost "happy go lucky, slice of life" like show. This changes rapidly, and it goes into a sci-fi, dark, depressing and disturbing show(after the first episode, which is a good thing). So don't be quick to judge (not like you are or anything ^^; )

Everyone: The anime involves rape (of children, shown offscreen), torture of children, children in war, death of children and the innocent, and the effects of war on the population. Not at all a light hearted show, and may be too dark for some to like. The wostst things take place off screen, but it makes them that much more compelling.

(BTW I don't suggest buying this anime (or anything) off of Ebay. It's there, and it's probally cheap(and used), but my cousin's boyfriend bought some manga off ebay, and got ripped off. 2 moths later it still hasn't come! So I don't trust Ebay too much. Unless you know the seller, I would advice against buying anime there(or anything for that matter), especially sense it's "anime bootleg heaven" . However Amazon and it's secondary sellers are screened for bootlegs, and watched. I never got ripped off there, and any problems I had, were fixed, and they were very nice about it. )

Well, theres children in the series Monster, who get abused and killed too.
Theres also a scene where a kid watches a guy have s*x with a prostitute in a street alley of a bad part in town.
^Very disturbing, so I'm used to dark series like this with deep, emotional, heavy stuff.

I like Anime series with serious stuff like that, so I'm really want to watch Now and Then. It's on the top of my list, and I'm hoping I find the box set somewhere.

^Yeah no joke, I think you will like it. And that's why I think I will like Monster. I can't wait for it to come out. I think it won't be too long, Viz Media isn't really doing anything else atm, minus releaseing Death Note, and the Death Note Movies,(also releasing /dubing Naruto, Bleach, and Pokemon ). But Bleach, Pokemon, and Naruto go on forever, and I don't even include them in stuff Viz has to do, lol. They've always done that stuff. I'm hoping forFebruary 2009 for Monster, but that's just a guess.

So here I am eagerly awaiting Monster, a series I know I will love. Good luck getting Now and There, Here and There. You'll like it.

There is still some hope for a re-release of this. If it does happen, don't look for it for a few years at the very least, but last thing CPM did, was re-release some titles, and claimed they were going to work though their back-catolog and re-release many more titles that haven't been out in awhile. Then they went into hibernation. But people still work at CPM, so, they must be planning on something one day. (of course the last thing they re-released was hentei).

Edit:
If you look on Amazon.com, they have all the single volumes there for sale (very cheap, but most are used, although some are new, and still very cheap). There are only 3 volumes to this show (12 episodes), so you could get all three volumes off of Amazon.com for $21.00 (not including shipping). That's a hell of a deal on an OOP anime DVD, that's ten years old!! I really suggest anyone who wants the DVD's to get them all.

Volume 1
Volume 2
Volume 3

Rightstuff also has DVD volume 1 and 2 for sale for $8.99 a peice. Sadly they have already sold out of Volume 3.

I can't order from online because I don't have a credit card. Does Amazon take personal checks by any chance?

If not then I dunno how I'll get my hands on this series. I really want to see it. Man, why did it have to be out of print? :( I hope I find it at that Anime store thats in Milwaukee, about 45 minutes away from my house. I'll be going this Wednesday. They have some kind of hard to find stuff that I don't find at a Suncoast or fye. It's possible Suncoast and fye can have it too, but only used I think.

Hmmm I'm not sure if Amazon takes personal checks. You can check (no pun intended) but I have a feeling they don't. I looked real fast, but not sure where that info would be listed. Sorry.

It is a sin that this is out of print. Before you try Amazon or whatever else you want to try to see if you can get this, check that Anime Store. Some anime store near me had the Box Set for The World of Narue, which is also by CPM, and has been out for 3 years now. Now and Then, Here and There has been out sense 2000-2001 though. The store also had some OOP Lupin the Third DVD's (LE ones too that are tough to get), some other stuff by Geneon that's OOP (Lain, Cardcaptor Sakura), and Venus Wars by CPM(also OOP). So there is hope for the Box Set (or more likely singles) still being in that anime store. I wish you good luck. If they don't have it, IDK what you can do. Use someone's credit card, and give them the hard cash? IDK? Good luck. This is an amazing series. Sucks that it's hard to get.

Edit:

Well I am currently re-watching this series. It's a very hard thing to do, because it's so dark, so depressing but it's worth it. I've been wanting to do re-watch this for awhile, but I kept putting it off, becuase it's so depressing and sad, and hard to watch. Anyway this is an amazing story and still one of my favorite series. If you haven't seen this anime, you must do so as soon as possible. You owe it to yourself and to humanity to watch this short series. It's very touching and emotional. I still must warn that this is not for the faint-of-heart, or anyone who wants laughs and gags out of their anime, but anyone who is prepared to be depressed, and in for a dark, sad, and amazingly told anime then please watch. Anime at it's best!

eiriyukiishot, please add more to the discussion. Why don't you like it that much? Don't just say you like something or don't like something. Please give reasons.
