Generally recognized by historians as the world's first animated cartoon, this animated short features the artist himself, J. Stuart Blackton, drawing various characters and faces on a blackboard which comes to life. Work started in 1904 and the short was released in 1906. The clown in the cartoon has been animated by the use of cutout animation. This animation is often compared to Émile Cohl's Fantasmagorie from 1908, which is regarded as the world's first animated cartoon drawn on paper.
